In other cases, the small intestines are modified so as to reduce its nutrient absorption capacity. Modifying the small intestines may involve removal of some parts of the intestines so as to leave a small surface area for food absorption. Some bariatric surgeries are permanent. Therefore, they are irreversible once done, while other surgeries are just temporary.

Conventional ways of losing weight like lifestyle changes, medication and dieting may be futile in treating class 3 obesity. It is for this reason that bariatric surgery becomes the sole option for individuals with extreme weight issues. Furthermore, bariatric surgery may be the sole option to people with some specific medical conditions. Examples of these conditions are type 2 diabetes and sleep apnea.

According to studies, people who undergo bariatric procedures usually lose between 15 and 30 percent of their body mass on average. The amount of mass that one loses usually depends on the kind of procedure one has undergone. There are many cases where people did not lose as much mass as they had hoped they would, while others end up regaining some or even more mass that they had lost.
