After Weight Loss Surgery Alabama Patients Can Start Life Anew

By Joshua Hughes

Obesity has become one of the biggest health threats in developed countries. Obese and overweight people maintain dangerous lifestyles. They often suffer from concomitant conditions such as certain types of cancer, hypertension, diabetes and heart disease, to name just a few potentially life threatening diseases. Apart from being disease prone, they often suffer to breathe properly, to move a round and to bend over. Many have tried dieting, unfortunately without lasting success. With weight loss surgery Alabama residents can actually lose a lot of weight, however.

There are different surgical procedures to remove excess fat from the body, but the most common and also the most drastic of them is the bariatric procedure. This is a dramatic and potentially dangerous surgical intervention during which suction pumps are used to remove large quantities of fat from the patient. Not every patient qualify for this procedure, however. Surgeons are very careful when selecting qualifying patients.

Surgeons require their potential patients to make dramatic changes to their lifestyle and to prove that they can truly serious about losing pounds on a permanent basis. This is why there is normally a six months period before the operation will be performed. During this period the surgeon will evaluate the patient regularly and see whether he is sticking to his new lifestyle patterns. Some patients opt for therapy to help them remain positive.

Most surgeons will refuse to perform the procedure if the patient has been smoking or using alcohol during the past six months. This is because alcohol can cause serious fluctuations in the blood sugar levels and this, in turn, can lead to dangerous complications during and after the operation. Nicotine can cause blood clots and this too, can pose a serious risk during the procedure.

It goes without saying that candidates for this procedure have to make immediate and often dramatic changes to their diet. Most surgeons actually require that their patients lose a significant amount of weight prior to undergoing the operation. Sugar must be cut out, protein intake must increase and salt must be used sparingly. No snacking is allowed and all meals have to be balanced. Patients sometimes find this excruciatingly difficult.

Another requirement is that patients immediately start with exercise programs. Low impact exercises such as cycling, swimming and walking are recommended. Many patients also start up yoga, which not only help them to become fit, but that also increase the flexibility of the body and strengthen the muscles and tendons. Another benefit of exercises is that it releases serotonin which make the individual feel good.

Patients must prepare for the fact that the first few weeks after the procedure will be difficult. Most patients experience severe discomfort and some pain. Serious bruising can only be accepted, taking into account the invasive nature of the procedure. Patients may also struggle to walk or to bend. These side effects will fade after a week or two, however.

One needs to be extremely motivated and determined to gain a comfortable weight before undergoing a bariatric procedure. It is painful and it is potentially dangerous. However, those patients that are truly serious about losing weight and keeping it off can reap great benefits and start to live fully once more.
