Changing Your Ways With New Haven Addiction Counseling

By Gary Stevens

Addictions definitely can be managed and people learn to live without them, discovering that they are able to take advantage of a more healthy lifestyle. However, this is not easy, and it doesn't happen overnight. It takes a lot of work on the part of the addict. Sometimes, New Haven addiction counseling can be something worth thinking about.

A counsellor who specializes in addictions will have specific methods knowing more about what techniques to use on specific clients. It can depend on their personality and their ability to trust and express themselves. In a case like this, the therapist may feel that group therapy may be something that they should take advantage of.

The most difficult thing about any addiction is realizing that you actually have a problem. Having the courage to tell yourself that you can't go on as you are takes a lot of mental ability. If you decide to take this on, on your own, it can be extremely difficult because you will set yourself goals, but without the experience, it can be difficult to carry this through and you would have felt as though you have failed.

This is a type of informal support that develops between group members. Many of the members will develop long and meaningful relationships. This is necessary in order to get the support that they need. It can be combined with the individual therapy as well. As one grows in confidence they will begin to express themselves in the group.

There are underlying issues that can lead to the addictions and this is why you need to talk to a professional who is understanding and compassionate. You have to feel that you are not judged because you may feel a sense of shame or guilt and this is what causes you to turn to the substances or various other addictive behaviours.

Counseling is part of rehab, but one can go for counselling after the rehab program is over. One can also go for individual counselling. It can be helpful to go to group therapy because everyone gets a chance to share. However, nobody is forced to say something. All types of counselling are very effective for something like this.

You may even find that there are underlying issues that you need to deal with. This is often the case with someone who has an addiction. They will stop eating because they have psychological issues. They will turn to drugs and alcohol because they will be haunted by their past. They may have a sex addiction, and this can be the cause of abuse.

Many therapists will refer their client somewhere else. This may happen when they want them to participate in a group or to take part in a specific type of therapy which they think the client will take advantage of. It could be something cognitive behaviour therapy or DBT. Group therapy is also useful, but each of these methods will be specific to the individual. Some people are less expressive, and it can take more time to connect. In a case like this, creative therapy may be helpful.
