Why An Omaha Walk In Clinic Could Be A Better Option Than An Emergency Room

By Paul Wagner

Even normally healthy people get sick sometimes. Some of them panic and call an ambulance to take them straight to the emergency room. Others drive themselves to the hospital, and a few decide to call the doctor as soon as possible. While all of these options may be appropriate under certain circumstances, there are times when the best option in Nebraska is an Omaha walk in clinic.

Emergency rooms and the staff that works in them are critical for those with life threatening injuries and illnesses. Everyone is trained to work quickly and make split second life and death decisions. If you opt to go to the hospital for a fever, aches, pains, or minor injuries you will be taking a professional away from the patients that are in dire circumstances. If you had gone to an urgent care facility you would have been treated by an experienced practitioner quickly and sent on your way.

Being treated by specialized hospital staff is expensive. Routine tests and exams can cost more than a thousand dollars. If you call an ambulance, you can expect to receive a bill that may be in the hundreds of dollars. Urgent care, by contrast, is much less expensive. These facilities are small and most are run efficiently. They don't have the overhead issues that face hospitals.

Another advantage you will find when you decide to go to a walk in facility is the convenience. These units are located in more and more pharmacies, malls, and big box stores. They may not be open twenty-four hours a day in some areas, but they do have extended evening hours. The parking is usually easier and the waiting time is negligible.

You wouldn't go to a cardiologist to treat a cold, and you shouldn't go to an emergency room for a minor health issue. Walk in clinics are set up for these kinds of situations. It is more efficient to go to one of these than to wait for hours to see a specialist in the hospital. You will be in and out faster and with less paperwork.

Paperwork is an issue in hospitals. Those who have spent time in an emergency room know how many forms there are to fill out and questions to be answered before they are able to get some help. It is not unusual to go to several windows in order to complete paperwork for a routine procedure or ailment. Urgent care facilities are simpler operations that do not require nearly as many forms.

If an emergency room doctor prescribes medication, you will have to find the hospital pharmacy and wait to get the prescription filled. At urgent care clinics, the pharmacy is right at your fingertips, and you will usually get faster service. You can always opt to get your medicine at your regular pharmacy however.

Getting sick can be frightening, especially if it is unexpected. Your natural reaction may be to go to the hospital, but that might not be the best option. For minor ailments and injuries, a walk in clinic can be quick, affordable, and the best solution.
