What Psychological Testing Child Custody Does For Children

By Carolyn Walker

Children need to be handled with care. What you say to a young child now and what someone does to them, will be remembered in their adult years. It will affect them and it will create an impact on their relationships, their emotions as well as in the way they behave. When parents are getting divorced, for example, one needs to look at psychological testing child custody.

This is where a professional child psychologist is needed who has the right type of qualifications and experience to deal with the scenario. It can obviously be very emotional for a young child and one needs to find a therapist who they can connect with and who understands them. The attorney can help with this. There will often be different circumstances and something more serious which can cause a lot more trauma.

Sometimes a court case will be about sexual abuse and the trauma that the child has suffered over the last couple of years. The father may be responsible for this and this is why the parents are getting divorced. This type of exposure can hurt the child. It is something that can affect them in years to come and this is why they need a psychologist who is especially trained for trauma.

Psychologists will work in different ways, depending on the personality and the age of the child. They may have to refer them to someone who is more specialized. A lot of kids work well with someone who is more practical in what they do. This can relate to a therapist who specializes in something creative or with play, for example.

They may find that play therapy can work best. Children often are more expressive in this way. They will be presented with a certain toys that they can play with. The psychologist will be able to assess what the problem is in the way they work. Children are honest in the way they draw and paint as well.

Sometimes, a child will draw their family in such as way which tells the therapist that there is something sinister going on. They may use a lot of dark colors, for example. Sometimes, there will be no windows in the house. They will also use toys, such as a superheroes and imaginary play. This will tell the therapist more about how they are feeling.

This can relate to what the problem may be and the danger that they can cause the child, because it can cause immediate issues for them. This particularly applies in the case of physical abuse. The evaluator should definitely be aware of something like this when the other parent points something out, directing it at a stepparent. It is not something that you can ignore.

A lot of the drama may happen after a parent remarries. Another parent may accuse the stepparent or a boyfriend or girlfriend of something after evaluating their young one. However, this is not always true. This is where a professional child custody evaluation needs to be completed. They will interview everyone concerned. This will happen over some time for it to be a success because everyone needs to be given a fair trial.
