Naming your little girl puppy is one of the most important choices you will make as a dog owner. The name has to function and you have to generally enjoy it since you will be spending the next 8 to 15 years with this dog. Giving your new little girl a name is a fun process. Here are a few ideas of where to go and what to think about when naming your puppy.
- What Do You Like? Consider all of the things that you are interested in. Do you enjoy movies? What are your favorites? Let's say that you enjoy Disney movies, and your favorite is "Aladdin." Then you may consider naming your puppy Jasmine. There is an endless supply of names that come from movies. This is also true for television or even your favorite musicians. If you love a band like the Beatles, consider naming her something like Abbey, for "Abbey Road."
- What Is Your Dog's Origin? What is the history of your dog's breed? Is she a German Shepard or a Rottweiler? If so, consider giving her a German name. Authentic German, French and many other names can be found in books and on the Internet.
- A Blast From The Past: This one may seem a bit odd but is one of my favorite ways to name an animal, especially dogs. Are you a fan of old-fashioned names? If so, take a leisurely stroll on a nice day through your local cemetery. Although this may seem a bit of a downer, looking at all of the stones will really get your brain going. Several old names such as Sylvia, Mabel, and Esther, might be just what you are looking for!
- Baby Books: There are a plethora of baby name books. Chances are you could find one at just about any store around! They can even be found in the checkout line at the grocery store. Names can be found in these books from all over the world and from every origin imaginable. These books are nice because they split the names into boys' names and girls' names. You can go straight to the girls' names and then you are able to read the origin, the pronunciation, and the definition of the name. This will help match a unique name to your new girl's personality.
- Flowers and Other Plants: What is as precious as a new little girl puppy? Maybe a flower. Flowers are a great source when naming your puppy. The choices are endless: Rose, Petunia, Lily, Daisy, and even something interesting like Carnation. You might also consider using plant names for your puppy, like Fern, or Ivy. Even a name of a tree might be suitable for your new baby, such as Poplar, or Magnolia.
- Historical Figures: There are so many memorable names throughout history that giving one of these names to your new puppy will give them lasting power. People will remember your puppy. There are endless choices, but consider some of these, Joan of Ark, Pocahontas, Harriet Tubman, and many others! You may even think of naming the puppy after something that has to do with the historical figure, such as Matoaka, the real name of Pocahontas.
- Places Around the World: When naming your new baby girl, keep in mind names of locations around the world. Think of names of states, such as Georgia or Virginia. Names of countries and cities could also be used. Think of names like Paris, London, or Sydney.
