Disadvantages Of Racial Bullying In Nursing

By Stephanie Walker

Transcultural discrimination is not a new thing in the community. It is even a normal thing to hear racial comments in the streets and even workplaces. Racial bullying in nursing is also spreading like wind and nurses are having a hard time while going about their work in the hospitals or other workplaces. The human rights commission is always receiving complaints about racism thus they need to take action.

Racism can actually take place in so many forms. The most common emanates from patients who tend to be proud thus they cannot be treated by a nurse who they do not prefer, especially if the nurse is an immigrant. This is usually so hostile and the nurses feel so discouraged to even work because they will not be comfortable at all. More so, this kind of work needs a person who can persevere.

Another form of discrimination comes at the place of work. The immigrant nurses often feel overlooked as they are not promoted even after they have worked tirelessly in the same institution while the local ones are promoted almost every other day. Therefore, the administrators can also be extending ethnological prejudice to these nurses.

In some occasions, doctors, as well as the co-workers, also bully their fellow workers who are from a different ethnological background. This mostly happens when the nurse has different views which are mostly right. So the doctors ensure that they use harsh and hurtful words to silence them so that they do not feel intimidated that a foreign nurse can be better than them.

This can get worse especially if the nurse is a male. The field of nursing is usually dominated by women therefore if a man works in the same field and happens to be an immigrant, he can go through a hard time at his workplace. The bullies are mostly patients as they can insult the male nurse. In some occasions, the doctors can also put down the nurse by insulting them based on gender and ethnicity.

For this reason, awareness programs are sprouting day night to defend the disadvantaged lot as well as show people how important it is to treat everyone equally. Most people are learning, and the number of complaints is decreasing in some states. The nurses also took it upon themselves to demonstrate so that everyone can hear their struggles.

There are nurses who are lucky to work in states that have strict rules against racism. If a person files a complaint that he/she is being bullied, the bully can be jailed for a substantial period. Therefore, a nurse who works here usually has a very stable working environment hence they attend to their patients very well. More so, they relate well with their colleagues who do not discriminate them.

To sum up, it is important to understand that transcultural prejudice is wrong and all people are equal. More so, in hospitals, nurses have to be treated equally no matter where they come from. Every nurse has to be respected even by the patients because the work they do is important in the community.
