Essential Tips Before Going For Macular Degeneration Treatment Bethesda

By Charles Williams

The eyes are delicate yet essential organs of the body. Like any other part of the body, the eyes have conditions specific to them and which threaten their proper functioning. Macular degeneration treatment Bethesda is a remedy to one such condition that occurs fairly often.

The eyes are essential for sight because without your eyes, it is simply impossible to see. They are a person's major ways of perceiving, understanding and navigating the world. However, unlike in other essential parts of the body, diseases that affect the eyes are rarely life threatening in themselves. Instead they simply threaten a person's sight, which to some can seem as horrible as death.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) usually affects the elderly. It is also easily confused with blindness. It is an eye defect that gradually causes damage to the macula, which is a spot in the center of the retina that allows one to see clearly. This condition can be present in one or both eyes and is evidenced by the inability of the eyes to see in details.

Blurred vision is the number one symptom that indicates the presence of macula of the eye degeneration. Images that are meant to be detailed become blurry and one cannot tell apart faces or objects. This can affect your daily activities as you won't be able to recognize family and friends, read your favorite book and generally carry on with your daily routine. Another symptom of macular deterioration is visual hallucinations.

There are two main instances of this condition; the wet and dry forms. The dry form occurs due to the buildup of debris around the retina which leads to deterioration in the center of the retina, while the wet form occurs when newly formed blood vessels from the choroid leak fluid which causes hemorrhaging.

Sadly, macular deterioration is not curable. But there are several treatments available to manage the condition. One of such treatments is surgery. AMD can be treated with surgery by removing the damaged blood vessels around the eyes. Laser remedy is another way to treat AMD. In this treatment, laser lights are used to remove the damaged blood vessels in the eyes. In some serious cases, these defective blood vessels are located in places too close to the retina. In such situations, a treatment called retinal translocation is used. In this treatment, the retina is carefully rotated to ensure that the defective blood vessels are repositioned safely away from the retina. Once repositioned, the blood vessels can now be removed with laser treatment without any risk of damage to the retina. In another treatment method, doctors can inject anti-angiogenic drugs directly into the eyes to stop the further development of defective blood vessels. This is done periodically as treatments wear off after some time.

There are vitamins and supplements which have proved effective in reducing risk of AMD. There are also approved drugs for combating this condition. A chronic sufferer can also acquire a range of visual aids which will have special lenses or electronic systems to assist sight.

There are also ways that have been found to prevent or at least reduce the risk of this condition. Smoking has been found to exacerbate this condition, and so it should be avoided. Also eating healthy is always advised as well as regular exercise. Both of these have been found to reduce the risk of AMD.
