By Eric Brooks

AACUM has produced statistical data that shows a 14 percent growth in the number of urgent care centers in the United States. This growth has been steady since 2008 and is likely to continue into the foreseeable future. Currently, there are over 9300 centers in the whole of the United States and the number continues to grow steadily at the rate of 300 centers every year. Over 300 centers are being established annually since 2011. Mobile Alabama urgent care centers experience one of the most rapid growth rates.

Urgent care centers are properly aligned with the modern economy. Eighty-three percent of all facilities experienced some kind of growth in their operations. Additionally, eighty-eight percent of the facilities were able to set up new shops and expand their operations. One needs to know what factors to consider in order to establish a successful center. This article discusses some of the factors that need to be considered. It is advisable to do more research because this article does not exhaust all the factors that need to be considered.

The first step one should take in establishing an urgent care center is to choose a specialty. Offering specialized care offers the business a competitive advantage. Most professionals working in most of these centers have training in emergency, internal, and family medicine. Making a choice of what kind of medical services will be provided to patients is important. Next, the necessary equipment and staff should be equipped into the facility to start operations.

After choosing a specialty, one should consider the location in which to establish the facility. The location in which the facility is established should have a high population and little competition. There should be a good source of income and employment to residents so that they can afford to pay for medical services.

Before settling for a given location, it is important to analyze its market and demographic characteristics. Information related to the population such as its characteristics can be provided by local census agencies. If one finds the demographics and market to be suitable, they should go ahead to find space to set up the center inside.

Space should be chosen so that it completely satisfies the operations of the facility without leaving too much room unused. Leaving a lot of room unused can be a source of lost profits, cost overruns, and underutilized space. It is often commonly recommended that every physician should be allocated a space of 1500 square meters when planning. This allows every physician three exam rooms to operate within.

In addition to the area set apart for physicians, a sizeable area also needs to be set apart for laboratories, radiology rooms, and the reception. The space should be designed so as to minimize the movement of physicians and the staff while maximizing the flow of patients. Effort should also be made to minimize clutter.

The factors to prioritize in the design are the peace of mind, convenience, and comfort of the patient. Patients also prefer environments that are welcoming, less clinical, and warm. Improving patient experience can help in obtaining and keeping patients. Facilities to include for this purpose include free Wi-Fi, flat-screens, fish tanks, coffee stations, and accessible electrical outlets. If the facility has good signage and big windows, it will attract more people.
