Creating Fashion Waves With Sisterlocks

By Joseph Olson

Many African sisters are now embracing their natural hair. This is a reflection of the growth and influence of the natural hair movement.Natural hair is styled in many different ways. One popular option is the installation of sisterlocks. The style has taken root around the world as more people with curly textured hair are embracing their cultural and ethnic heritage.

Locking is a permanent hairstyle in which strands of hair are fused to each other. Traditional locks, which originated with the Rastafarian faith, are created by rolling hair between the palm of the hands. These slimmer locks though, are created by a weaving process in which the stylist converts the hair into tiny locks that are distinct from traditional locks which tend to be bigger.

Needless to say, the style takes a lot of time to complete. Installation sessions can rage anywhere from twenty four hours to a couple of days depending on the thickness and length of the hair being styled. For installations that require more than a day for completion, stylists often break the job into parts necessitating several trips to the salon. Of course, the results are worth the time an effort spent.

The hairstyle is sported by both genders even though it is more popular among females. The male version of the style is called brotherlocks and tends to feature locks that are a little bigger in size than the female option. Women in particular, gravitate towards the style because it means fewer trips to the salon to get styling treatments such as perms and maintenance sessions.

One of the reasons for its popularity is its versatility. The hair can be styled to suit formal, casual and sport-like settings. A number of creative styles are sported in the professional environment and events like weddings feature some very elegant up-dos and side-sweeps among other styles. Lock wearers sport their hair with pride and confidence from the boardroom to the dance floor and this pride is fast infecting others who in turn decide to get the locks installed.

Some people get creative by coloring their locks. Colors such as red, gold and purple first took root among lock wearers. Then other colors such as blue and green came on the scene. These colors are added to the ends of the locks in some cases. In other situations they are used from the root to the tip of each lock covering the entire head, or just sections in order to create a desired pattern.

As the hairstyle quickly gained popularity, stylists around the world rushed to get trained in the art of creating these locks. As a result, it is easy to find a stylist who offers the service. You can learn how to install these locks if you wish to do it yourself. For those who are interested in learning about the installation process, tutorials on how to create the style are available.

Due to the versatility that it facilitates, this hairstyle is expected to remain prominent in the fashion world for years. The confidence that it inspires in wearers who become more appreciative of the flexibility and beauty of their natural tresses is another factor adding to its expected longevity on the fashion scene.
