How A Rockville MD Dentist Helps With Sore Gum Relief

By Katy Parfait

Are your gums swollen or sore? One of the most common causes of tooth loss in adults is gum disease - an gums that are sore is an important sign. There are, however, a few additional causes of sore gums.

Your gums might become sore if you brush or floss them too enthusiastically. Among some of the other causes of sore gums are ulcers of the mouth - these tend to have red edges and a white center. While ulcers generally appear on the insides of the cheeks, they can also develop on the gums. Both chemotherapy and smoking can cause problems with gums. A lot of women experience problems with their gums during the mid and late stages of pregnancy, at puberty, while using various forms of birth control and right before their periods.

Working with a Rockville MD dentist is a great way to get relief for you swollen bleeding and sore gums. Finding the cause of this problem is the first step.

Gum disease is most often treated with deep cleaning - this is called scaling and root planing, meaning they will clean your teeth below the gum line as needed. Your dentist may also prescribe a prescription strength mouthwash, oral antibiotics, or an enzyme suppressant among other things. In extreme cases, flap surgery is performed - lifting back the gums, removing tartar and then sewing them back into place. Gum disease can also cause bone loss, which may require grafts. Obviously, you should see your dentist at the first sign of gum disease (and regularly) to avoid this.

Even without attention and care, a mouth ulcer is likely to resolve on its own, however, it can be associated with other conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBS), and celiac disease, both of which can be serious. Your provider may suggest antibiotics as needed or a special mouthwash.

Talk to your dentists about your sore, bleeding gums. Your dentist will look for other signs of gum disease and can assist you in improving your oral health.
