Understanding Locum Tenens Hospitalist Better

By Jose Reed

Locum tenens which is a latin word in English means place holder. They are any kind of person that replaces various job in the event that the other person will be absent and will not be able to do its job. In the medical industry, this refers to a medical staff who replaces the work of another for a short term during his or her absence.

This article will help you in understanding their line of work better. Locum tenens hospitalist is becoming in demand by the day. Studies show that most healthcare organizations are hiring them than any other else to fill up the gaps of the hospitals short lists of staffs.

There are many reasons why physicians are venturing into this new type of work. One of the common reason is about the schedule. Mostly, older people are into this because they will only need to work for a short while. That is due to their physical strength since they will no longer be able to work longer. They even get to choose their desire time or place to do their job.

Unlike with permanent physicians that needs to be at the workplace most of the time. Many doctors rant is that they always hear their names on the monitor being paged to go here and there, which is a bit frustrating. They have to provide reports for the day, and mostly they worked overtime.

One of the nicest benefit to this is, you have the opportunity to travel. You can travel freely, and you are even paid to travel, how cool is that. That is because, you will be assigned to different locations. One day you need to be in Africa to do some medical mission, and another day in Switzerland where you are assigned in a rural health care facility. You can even choose where you would want to be assigned.

The benefit of being a locum also is that with their line of work they will be able to fly to any places anywhere to attend work. If there is work in another country, say in New York maybe, they are going to fly there immediately. After a few days, they might be assigned to like attend a health program in Africa maybe. In that way, they will be able to try different jobs in different types of environment.

This benefits to older physicians as well. Fun fact, 50 percent of the locums are oldies. Since, being one does not require you to be at your job for the whole day, old physicians will still be able to work without being pressured. Most of them are retirees, what they do is they leave the job permanently but still work for a minimum time only so that they have more time to rest, and they have a salary.

In terms of the salary, locums are paid higher than those permanent ones. Thats why many are embracing this new job. Locums are paid per hour, while the permanents are paid the same amount monthly.

However, since most locums are freelance general practitioner meaning they works independently they do not have any benefits, which means, taxes, health insurance, and retirement fund is shouldered by them. That is the downside to being one. In other words, they have to work financially for themselves despite the high salary.
