Life guarding can be a great summer job for a young high school girl, someone on summer vacation from college, or a young person still looking for a permanent job or a career start. If you are athletic, love to swim, and are not afraid of responsibility, this could be a real possibility for summer employment. It is not a job for everyone though, and it is much more than just fun in the sun and joking around with other lifeguards when you are off duty. There are some important decisions to make before accepting such a position. While lifeguard swimsuits for women may not seem like one of them, it is a very important part of the job.

Keeping swimmers safe while still allowing them to have fun and relax is a big job. Before you can even apply, you will need to attend the necessary classes, pass the required exams, and get all of the certifications you need to qualify for a life guarding position.

Most young girls are concerned with their appearances and want to wear just the right clothing. Not all swimwear is suitable for life guarding duties however. They must meet special and strict guidelines before they are acceptable for the job. Your employer may provide you with the requirements or make arrangements for you to be fitted for a specific suit.

Many lifeguard swimsuits are fitted to make certain that they conform perfectly to each body type. In a moment of crisis there will be no time to adjust straps or worry about any flimsy material getting in the way of a rescue.

In addition to fit, color and material matter as well. Many suits serve almost as uniforms, quickly identifying the wearer as official and one who has the authority to make fast decisions that must be obeyed by everyone in the vicinity of area they are guarding. Suits must be made of material that allows the lifeguard to swim rapidly without anything that can slow her in the water.

Always remember that, in your position, you are one of the public figures representing the organization, municipal group, or private club that employs you. You must conduct yourself in such a way that represents your employers in a professional and positive manner. That includes the type of swim gear you wear while working.

As a young girl, this may be one of the first times you have been in any position of authority. If you expect people to obey your instructions and follow your directions, you will have to learn how to act in such a way that earns their respect. This includes your physical appearance. Also remember that much younger girls may be watching you and looking up to you. The way you look and the way you conduct yourself matters.

Life guarding can be a great summer job with lots of time in the sun and the water. It is a very serious matter however, and you should never forget that the lives of everyone in the pool or on the beach is your responsibility. A professional attitude and suitable attire can help you succeed.
